The Tonto dwellings in Arizona were declared a National Monument in 1907 and the coastal redwood forest Muir Woods in California received this designation in 1908. They were among the first to receive this recognition and protected status following the establishment of the Antiquities Act by President Roosevelt in 1906. The Tonto preservation contains the ruins of two cliff dwellings established by the Salado Indians around 1300 AD. The settlements were built rather high up on a steep hillside partially within well-protected natural caves overlooking the Tonto Basin. Muir Woods is an enchanted redwood forest just a few miles North of San Francisco. Both monuments are shown in juxtaposition of their respective beauty.
