I have just been visiting New York City during a short trip with one of my sons. Being there on an anniversary of the 911 tragedy was merely a coincidence and not planned as such. However, the very special atmosphere which surrounds the city on this particular day, even after all those years, added a unique perspective and context to some of the photos (see "Portfolio" tab) I took during the visit. I still remember, like many of us do, where I was on 911 2001. I was in Florence, Italy, attending a research conference and stepped out of the auditorium for a visit to the washroom. There was an espresso bar in the foyer with a TV and one of the WTC towers was burning. I stopped and watched, and back in this moment nothing was clear, it could have been an accident, nothing made sense. Then, a few minutes into it, I saw the second plane crash into the second WTC tower live on TV.
For context to the younger audience I add a shot from 1995 showing the Twin Towers and a later shot without them. Closing with a picture of the Statue of Liberty - standing tall - which I took during an earlier visit this year.
